How does the mix ratio of cement blocks affect its strength?
The mix ratio of cement blocks is mainly composed of cement, aggregate, water and admixtures. The influence of the mix ratio of each component on its strength is as follows:
Cement
Cement is a cementitious material. Its strength grade and dosage directly affect the strength of the block. When other conditions are the same, the use of cement with a higher strength grade can make the block have higher strength. The increase in cement dosage will enhance the bonding force between cement stone and aggregate, thereby improving the strength of the block. However, excessive cement dosage will not only increase the cost, but also may cause problems such as increased shrinkage and easy cracking of the block.
Aggregate
Type: Different types of aggregates have different physical and chemical properties, which affect the strength of the block. For example, using hard and rough crushed stone as aggregate has a strong bonding force with cement stone, which can improve the strength of the block; while soft or smooth aggregate has relatively weak bonding force, which will reduce the strength of the block.
Particle size: The size of aggregate particle size affects the porosity of the block and the contact area between cement slurry and aggregate. Generally speaking, reasonable particle size grading can make aggregates more densely packed and reduce porosity, thereby improving the strength of blocks. If the aggregate particle size is too large, it will lead to uneven cement paste wrapping, weak interface bonding, and affect the strength of blocks; if the particle size is too small, it will increase the specific surface area, make the cement dosage relatively insufficient, and is not conducive to strength improvement.
Grading: Good grading can make aggregates form a dense accumulation in the block, reduce pores, and improve the density and strength of the block. If the grading is poor, the aggregates are loosely packed and the porosity is large, and more cement slurry is needed to fill the pores, which not only wastes cement, but also reduces the strength of the block due to problems such as cement stone shrinkage.
Water
Water plays a key role in the cement hydration process. The right amount of water can fully hydrate the cement and form a good cement stone structure, thereby ensuring the strength of the block. The water-cement ratio (the mass ratio of water to cement) is an important factor affecting the strength of the block. If the water-cement ratio is too large, the cement paste will be too thin and soft, which will lead to loose cement stone structure, increased porosity, and reduced block strength; if the water-cement ratio is too small, the cement cannot be fully hydrated, which will cause the cement stone to lack sufficient bonding ability, and also affect the strength of the block.
Admixtures
Adding an appropriate amount of admixtures, such as water reducers and early strength agents, to cement blocks can improve the performance of the blocks and increase their strength. Water reducers can increase the fluidity of cement slurry without increasing the amount of water, so that the cement slurry can better wrap the aggregate, increase the density of the blocks, and thus enhance the strength. Early strength agents can accelerate the hydration reaction of cement and improve the early strength, which is of great significance for accelerating construction progress and improving production efficiency.
